i have done this EXACT SAME THING. "roasting" the eggplant to get that nice roasty taste for the babaganoush, right?
It was years ago, sitting on the couch watching some TV with my roommate while the eggplant roasted. suddenly... BOOOOOOM! we jumped sky high. thought the gas oven was exploding. opened it up to see stalagtites of eggplant all over the oven.
It's a lesson you only have to learn once. By the way, same goes for whole potatoes in the microwave, in case you haven't learned that one yet.
It has a certain squid-like quality, don't you think?
My personal worst in the evil kitchen mess dept was dropping a nearly full bottle of pomegranate molasses on the white ceramic tile floor. Goo, glass, and excited cats in danger of permanent foot mauling. I have to admit, I wept while scraping it up. I should have taken a photo.
Have you seen David Lebovitz's Chocolate Crime Scene?
This exact thing happened to me a few years ago! I thought a bomb had gone off next door, the explosion was so loud. And the clean-up was The Worst Thing In The Kitchen. EVER.
I must be such a geek, because I think that looks really, really cool.
I think my biggest mess in the kitchen came when I was making a fancy dessert for my parents in my tiny NYC kitchen. I had a big Pyrex measuring cup full of raspberry coulis sitting on top of the stove. I had to take the chocolate cake out of the oven, and when I lifted the pan, I discovered that thin patches had developed in my potholder. I jerked up, hitting the bare tops of my hands against the hot oven rack, at which point I really jerked and the cake went flying and somehow I knocked the coulis, which hit the floor in an enormous spray of glass and raspberry, covering the walls and RING! my parents were at the door, ready to see how their daughter was doing in her new place. Nightmare.
ROFL! Hardie har har. I've done that. And recently, I made a baked camenbert which exploded and drizzled all over my oven. I was playing code with my nerd-man in another room, and so completely forgot to honour the food I was cooking with actual love and attention. I am the proud creator of 'cheese enamel', a very sturdy material.
Ooo bless you... you took pictures! blog nerd!
ReplyDeleteI heart baba ganoush. Looking forward to your recipe...

Oh god, that looks gruesome.
ReplyDeleteI would not have guessed it was possible to take such clear, well-lighted photographs inside one's oven. Too bad about the eggplants. Courage.
ReplyDeleteMcC: recipe forthcoming. Right now the portions of eggplant that I salvaged are in the fridge awaiting their mission.
ReplyDeleteep: yes it made an incredible noise. I thought a light fixture might have fallen to the ground.
robyn: disgusting. I should rename this blog "Things You Probably Don't Want to Eat."
CL: I lightened the shadows in the top shot in Photoshop, but thanks.

Hi Lindy. Yes, I have seen the crime scene.
ReplyDeleteThis exploding eggplant was nothing compared with the liquid smoke incident a few years back. Don't ever drop that stuff on your ceramic tile.
