I was going to ask the same thing, though I was going to guess that they are chestnuts. Are they now avail pre-peeled? That would be good.
Those things in the second picture are chestnuts from China. They're sold as snacks at my favorite local Asian grocery store and are much cheaper than the canned or plastic-wrapped chestnuts at the gourmet market. In combination with those cubes of bread they made a nice stuffing.
